The Pig Meat Problem

Many of our friends do not eat pig as pig is neither Kosher nor Halal. But pig meat is never labled as "pig meat". So I have compiled a list of pig related terms to help them.

  • Back: Bacon cut from the back of a pig.
  • Bacon: Strictly, "Bacon" is a way of slicing meat but it is almost invariably sliced from a pig.
  • Banger: Slang for Sausage.
  • Belly: Short for pork belly.
  • Black puding: Sausage made from pig blood and pig lard.
  • Blood sausage: Sausage made from pig blood and pig lard.
  • BLT: Bacon Lettuce and Tomato Sandwich.
  • Boar: The wild subspecies of the pig.
  • Bockwürste: A type of German pork sausage.
  • Bratwürste: A type of German pork sausage.
  • Cervelat: Switzerland's national pork sausage.
  • Charcuterie: A branch of cooking specialising primarily in pork-based products.
  • Chipolatas: Small sausages. Pork by default.
  • Chops: A cut of meat. Pork by default.
  • Confit: Food preserved by immersion. Usually goose, duck or pork.
  • Crackling: Fried or roasted pork skin.
  • Cumberland rings: A spiral form of lightly spiced pork sausage.
  • Faggots: Balls of meat off-cuts. Usually pork.
  • Fatback: Pork fat, taken from the back of the animal.
  • Frankfurter: A type of pork sausage originating from Frankfurt.
  • Gammon: Cured hind leg of pork.
  • Gayettes: A French style of pork sausage.
  • Ham: A cut of meat from the hind leg. Pig by default.
  • Hamburger: Not a pig product! A Beef burger. The name is due to the fact that they originated from Hamburg, Germany.
  • Headcheese: A cold cut of cured meat and jelly. Often pork.
  • Heart: The heart of an animal. Could be pig, cow, sheep, etc.
  • Hog: An alternative name for pig. Also Harley-Davidson motorbike..
  • Hog roast: A whole pig, roasted.
  • Hot dog: A Sausage served in a roll.
  • Kevin Bacon: Not a pork product! Hollywood actor.
  • Kidney: The kidney of an animal. Could be pig, cow, sheep etc.
  • Kidney fat: Fat from around the kidney. Ambiguous. Could be pork.
  • Kilted sausage: Pork sausage wrapped in bacon.
  • Knackwürste: A type of German pork sausage.
  • Kulen: Sausage from Croatia or Serbia.
  • Lard: Pig fat.
  • Les Oreilles de Crisse: Deep-fried salted pork fat
  • Links: Sausage (referring to the fact that they are joined together when made).
  • Liver: An animal's liver. Could be pig.
  • Lorne Sausage: Sliced pork sausage from Scotland.
  • Lungs: An animal's lungs. Could be pig.
  • Meatballs: A ball made from meat. Could be anything!
  • Meatloaf: Ground meat served in a loaf shape. Usually beef but sometimes pork.
  • Middle: Short for Middle Bacon. Between back bacon and streaky bacon.
  • Offal: Meat made from the internal organs of farm animals. Could be pig.
  • Pate: A paste of ground meat and fat. Often Goose. Sometime pork.
  • Pate de foie de pork: Pork pate.
  • Pepperami: Spicy Italian cured pork sausage.
  • Pepperoni: Spicy Italian cured pork sausage.
  • Pig: The animal in question. Almost never used as the name for the meat.
  • Piglet: Baby pig.
  • Pigs in Blankets: Sausage wrapped in bacon.
  • Pølsehorn: Sausage wrapped in bacon (danish).
  • Pork: Generic name for meat from a pig.
  • Prosciutto: A form of Italian sliced ham.
  • Red puding: A pork sausage from North East England.
  • Ribs: Meat from the ribs of an animal. Usually pork.
  • Rillettes: A form of pate made from cubes of pork.
  • Rillons: Cubes of pork.
  • Rind: A word that means "Skin". Can mean fruit peel. Fried or roasted pork skin.
  • Rindswürste: A type of German pork sausage.
  • Rookworst: Smoked pork sausage from Holland.
  • Salami: Spiced, sliced italian cured pork sauage.
  • Sausage Roll: Sausage in pastry.
  • Saucisson: Sausage from France.
  • Sausage: Item made from ground meat. Pork by default.
  • Savaloy: A form of pork sausage.
  • Scotch Egg: Boiled egg encased in pork sausage meat, coated in breadcrumbs.
  • Scratchings: Fried or roasted pork skin.
  • Slagers worst: Pork sausage from Holland.
  • Snorker: Slang for Sausage.
  • Sowbelly: Pork belly.
  • Sow: Female pig.
  • Spam: Spiced ham produced by Hormel Foods Corp.
  • Spleen: The Spleen of an animal. Could be pork.
  • Square sausage: Sliced pork sausage from Scotland.
  • Steak and kidney: The steak will be beef but the kidney is ambiguous. Could be lamb or pig.
  • Streaky: Bacon with streaks of fat.
  • Stuffing: Filling for chicken, turkey and other birds, often made with pork sausage meat.
  • Sty: The place where a pig lives.
  • Suckling pig: A piglet, raised on it's mother's milk. Usually roasted.
  • Terrine: A dish used for cooking ground meat. Also refers to food prepared in that dish. Could be pork.
  • Toad in the hole: A traditionl dish of pork sausage in batter.
  • Tripe: An animal's stomach. Could be pig.
  • Trotters: Pigs feet.
  • Wiener: American term for sausage.
  • Wild Boar: The wild subspecies of the pig.
  • Worstjes in deeg: Sausage wrapped in bacon (dutch).
  • Würste: German pork sausage.
